What we collect, and what we don't

This policy explains what data Terminalwire, owned and operated by Rocketship, LLC (“Terminalwire,” “we,” “us”), collects, why we collect it, and — just as importantly — what we never collect. We practice data minimization: we collect the connection and licensing metadata we need to run the service, and nothing more.

How Terminalwire works

Terminalwire has three parts, and understanding them makes clear where data does and does not flow:

  • Server Software is open source (Apache-2.0) and runs in the operator’s own infrastructure. Anyone can self-host it. The code that touches your end users’ data runs on the operator’s servers, not ours.
  • Client Software is the proprietary command-line program (terminalwire-exec) that end users install. It is distributed only by Terminalwire.
  • Terminalwire.com (Rocketship, LLC) runs three services: license verification, the build and installer service, and auto-updates.

When an end user runs a command, their Client connects directly to the operator’s Server. Terminalwire is not in that data path.

What we do not collect

This is the heart of our privacy posture, so we state it plainly:

  • We do not identify, profile, or track individual end users. There is no user account tied to a Client, and we do not attempt to link an installation to a person.
  • We never see what end users do. We do not receive the commands they run, their arguments, their input or output, terminal contents, or any application data. The connection between the Client and the operator’s Server is direct — we are not a party to it.
  • We count installations, not people. For licensing and aggregate volume we count Clients per Server. We do not build profiles of individuals.

What we collect

We collect a small amount of metadata to operate the service.

License verification. Each time a Client connects to a Server, the Client asks terminalwire.com whether that Server holds a valid license. In that request we receive and store:

  • the Server URL being connected to;
  • the requesting IP address;
  • the User-Agent string, which contains the Terminalwire client version, operating system, CPU architecture, release channel, and protocol version; and
  • a timestamp.

Installation and auto-updates. To deliver the correct build for your machine, the installer and updater send your operating system, CPU architecture, and release channel to terminalwire.com and releases.terminalwire.com.

Website. We keep standard server logs for visitors to terminalwire.com (IP address, browser/user-agent, timestamps) and may use first-party analytics. We use no third-party advertising networks and no ad trackers.

Accounts and billing. For paying operators, we collect account and billing contact information — name, company, and email. Payments are handled by our payment processor, Stripe; we do not store full payment card details.

Why we collect it

  • To verify whether a given Server holds a valid commercial license (licensing is per-Server).
  • To understand aggregate usage volume.
  • To deliver the correct client build and security updates.

Assurances for security and procurement teams

  • The Server is open source and self-hostable. The software that handles your users’ data runs in your infrastructure, not ours.
  • Data minimization. We collect connection and licensing metadata, never session payloads.
  • No data sales, no ad networks. We do not sell data, and we use no third-party advertising or ad-tracking networks.
  • Standard request metadata. IP address and User-Agent are ordinary request metadata and are not linked to an individual’s identity.

Data retention

We retain the data described above for as long as it is needed for licensing, billing, security, and operating the service. After that, we delete it or reduce it to aggregate, non-identifying form.

Third-party processors

We rely on a small set of service providers to run Terminalwire, including our hosting/infrastructure provider and our payment processor (Stripe). These providers process data only to provide services to us.

By using Terminalwire and our website, you consent to this Privacy Policy and agree to our terms.
